SD utility company warns of check-cashing scam using its name
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — NorthWestern Energy is warning its customers and others of a check-cashing scam using the company's name.
It says people in other states have reported getting a $2,650 check from NorthWestern Energy, LLC with a letter indicating that they have been chosen to participate in a survey. The letter directs them to deposit the funds in their account and immediately wire a portion of the money to a pre-determined "relative."
NorthWestern said the checks should not be deposited and the letters should be reported to law enforcement or the state's consumer affairs office.
NorthWestern Energy provides electricity and natural gas to 665,000 customers in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.
