SCAMS that involve Buying GIFT CARDS and telling THEM the number that is on the back.
This one was from 2019 but going through my old messages I realized that someone I used to talk to no longer has their account which I thought was odd. Then I realized that one of two things happened: Either the person was not who they said they were from the first place OR they hacked an account of someone I used to know. I suspect they were someone I knew but since I was not on that messenger site for many years I did not get the message until someone else already had control of the site and I was not aware. To show you this I added in the date stamps. I took out any identifying information from the chat such as real names and site names.
It started like this:
A month later they posted an image that was questionable showing a lot of skin and because I know hot pics get stolen and used by scammers I thought I would ask this.
Also looking back on this I could not tell you if the hot pic was her or not as I never met her in person and did not have many pics on her page anymore. I only knew her best by her online name as a member from a support forum I was on a lot back once upon a time.
Then on April 25th 2020 I sent my contacts the importance of wearing a Face Mask during the Pandemic and why (video).
Then I got a reply from them in July 2020 but like I said I did not talk to this person a lot (as you can tell in the gaps of dates) so I could not tell if this was her or not. *NOTE: The image I put the scam text over for security reasons
Then she sent me 12 cell phone screenshots of conversations with others telling them how to and them saying wow it worked and getting money in either their cash app. Some of the pics showed that they showed her their receipts of buying the iTunes gift cards and others showed success messages for getting amounts such as $2,850.00 into their account. There was also a pic where someone sent a photo from their cell of the gift cards they bought to her and then it said on the person's cell "You sent $3000 to (Cash App Tag) from her. One photo showed she asked someone to take a photo of the cabinet holding the gift cards so she could tell them which one to get and they sent that photo they took with their cell phone to her.
At this point I knew it was a scam so I replied:
I never checked back so I was not aware "she" had replied as it was another stint of time I was not on there. Looking at that chat again back before they got their account banned I saw that they did replay and had sent one more message that same day along with 3 videos that are no longer available. (However upon posting about this here I realized those had been saved to my PC and so I checked what they were. They were 3 separate testimonials from 3 women from 6 to 19 seconds in length. Each saying how it is legit and they just got their money. They all sounded to have American accents and not from India or any country in Africa. I wondered if they were in fact real victims who thought they got their money before they realized it was a scam and they did not actually have the money or it bounced. I never did follow through myself so not sure how it works from the point of going past the chat to buying and giving her/him the gift card codes.
By that time if I was not already sure I would have been sure because it did not matter that I said I could not afford it or that I was out (not interested). They kept pushing not just with that message but 3 videos to push their point home as "proof". I also noticed looking back at this that it seemed that they repeated themselves and put spaces in the wrong spots a lot as if they were copy pasting a script. (This is actually typical of scammers who are not native English speakers but trying to scam English people.) The testimonials were most likely coerced while still in their excitement but not necessarily receiving their money but thinking they got it. It is easy to fool people with a fake confirmation of money received at times and I have never used Cash App but on a cell phone I wonder if that one confirmation of money sent was just an image. Since this was now a few years ago it is too late to investigate this thoroughly for myself.
