Been awhile but lately a friend is getting scam messages on their cell phone as text from email addresses. Here is the one they just got minutes ago: Sender: jmmm@roadrunner.com Sent: 9am Jan 27th 2017 Cannnot find other posts that are the same so this one is new but the same style as any unexpected lottery spam sent to your cell phone or email: www.hoax-slayer.net/phone-text-message-lottery-scams/If you haven’t entered a lottery, raffle, sweepstake or other competition, then you cannot win it!
No legitimate lottery will randomly select email addresses or mobile phone numbers to win prizes.Mobile Telephone ScamsMany people are familiar with landline telephone scams, but mobile scams vary slightly. You could receive a text message stating that you are the winner of a cash prize draw, mobile raffle, mobile lottery game or similar, and that your number has been chosen to win a cash prize. However, if you call the number provided you can expect hefty call fees, plus you may even get your phone hacked if you do respond. If you reply in any way, you are enabling the scammers to access the information on your phone, SIM card or even data from websites you have visited - which, in the days of mobile banking, could be catastrophic for you. Read about Lotto Scams from Lotto.netThe letter (or email or text) is addressed to a "reader" or a "winner" and does not call you by your real name.Read about scams on Lottery.netA forum where people post about lotto scams they have come across: www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=12
